Q1 Reading List. 3 Books and an Essay: What Hit, What Missed, and What’s Worth Your Time.

/ High Output Management by Andy Grove is one of the few books specifically focused on middle managers and how they can become more effective. It begins by clearly defining performance: a manager’s output = the output of their organization + the output of neighboring organizations under their influence. The book offers practical advice throughout.

/ Born Fighting by Jim Webb details the history of the Scots-Irish and their influence on American cultureβ€”from Hadrian’s Wall and its effect on the Celts, to their descendants settling in Appalachia. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand today’s populist right.

/ The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a book I quit. I got about 30% through, and it wasn’t engaging me enough. My interest waned more than expected. Like my experience reading Dickens last year, the writing is surprisingly approachable for the 1800s, but disinterest prevented me from finishing it. I’ll try one of his shorter books later this year.

/ HighAgency.com is an essay I read this week. It’s a 30-minute read and recommended if you’re looking for a motivational boost.
