Inertia, You SOB

Do you remember Newton’s Laws?

Here is a refresher:

Newton's 3 laws of motion

I’ve been thinking about the first law lately.

A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force. Also known as: inertia.

Inertia is insidious as we age. Things, habits, and outlooks go from novel, to comfortable, to hard to move if we aren’t on guard. Getting something moving once it has been at rest for a while takes significant energy.

I admire people who overcome their own personal inertia.

For instance, my wife, having lived in a city since reaching driving age, never needed to get her license. She just got her license. Fifteen years later than most, and with the extra hurdle of having a baby to schedule around while she did her driving lessons. Gaining a new skill like this requires getting out of your normal routine, learning something new…and overcoming that inertia.

I have my own personal inertia’s that need addressing. Or at least asking, “am I doing this because it is what I am used to, or am I doing this because I still want to?”

The key is to recognize the inertia, and understand that it takes extra effort to get that body back in motion again.
