Q4 2022 Reading Listย ๐Ÿ“š

It has been a busy quarter! My first son was born which has kept my wife and I with our hands full, in the best of ways. When he is awake, and not eating or in need of being changed, I’ll sometimes read to him. His favorites so far, based on the kicks per page, have been Mikey & The Dragons and The Cat In The Hat. It has been a blast.

One other thought before diving into this quarters list: the value of a kindle goes up when you have a newborn. Babies love to be held, and it is hard to turn pages on a paperback book with one paw. Thus the phone and the kindle are the easiest things to work with, but we’d be well served to spend more time on the latter.

Q4 Books ๐Ÿ“š

  1. Einstein: His Life & Universe by Walter Isaacson – Isaacson might be my favorite biographer. I loved his writing on Jobs & Franklin, and this one was no different. You get an understanding of the person he covers, the history of those times, and a dive into what made them great. One of my favorite parts from this book comes from a speech quoted early in the book where another physicist says that everything meaningful has already been discovered…a few years later Einstein produced 5 papers which is now known as “the miracle year”. Oh, and physics was his “side hustle” at the time – he worked in a patent office because he couldn’t get a teaching job.
  2. Discipline is Destiny by Ryan Holiday – I’ll read pretty much anything Ryan Holiday puts out. The formatting makes it easy to read in small chunks as each chapter is only a couple pages. His books are great for first thing in the morning. If you want a taste of what the book is about, check out my piece on Lou Gherig which was inspired by Ryan’s profile on him.
  3. Snow Leopard by Category Pirates – This book is specific to anyone who wants to get a better understanding of the digital writing economy. My favorite concept from this book is the 5 levels of content creation.
  4. The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale – I picked this up as I noticed my mind wandering to negative thought patterns more often. If you won’t be turned off the idea of praying, this might be a good book for you.
  5. The Road to Character by David Brooks (audio) – this is one of my all time favorites. Originally read in 2018, I wanted to revisit the concepts which encourage a moral and upright life. The ideas in this book are the kind I want my son to know me for.

I hope that one or more of these books catches your eye and, if not, check out my previous quarters reading lists.
