The Book I Wish I Had 5 Years Ago: THE PATH

Get on THE PATH today

Over the past 5 years since I graduated from college I have been reading at least 30 books each year. I took David Foster Wallace’s immortal words in his This is Water speech literally: “your education is the job of a lifetime and it commences now.”

Not long into year one I picked up a journal. I started writing and reflecting on the lessons I was taking in. With each book came new lessons to reflect on and a question to ask myself: what am I going to do with this new knowledge? Ultimately through these readings and reflections over five years I kept coming back to some of the same questions:

  • Who (not just what) do I want to be?
  • What do I stand for?
  • Who are the people I want to surround myself with & why?

So on and so forth….

I also found myself coming back for the same topics that I felt I can always improve on and learn more about: personal character & philosophy, relationships, career, lifestyle & habits, health, and personal finance.

Reading these materials, reflecting, and answering hard questions became like sweeping the floor: you will always need to do it again.

It turns out I was (and still am) not alone in the relentless pursuit of knowledge & refinement of my answers. My now dear friend, Nicholas Slavtcheff, and I met in the weight room in May 2017, and have since spent much of our time in between sets, in the locker room, on long hikes, and over chess matches discussing what books we are reading. Together we were able to bounce ideas off each other and refine our personal philosophies.

Over the last year Nick and I have been working on a book that we call The Path. The Path is our attempt to put together the book we wish we had when starting off in the working world. It is the book I wish I had 5 years ago, and plan on using it to “sweep the floor” each year going forward. I hope you will consider getting yourself a copy, and sharing one with a friend who is just starting out.

The Path is designed around the belief that mindful introspection unlocks the voice of the subconscious mind to the conscious. The ultimate goal of this deep introspection is a complete integration of your efforts & focus in pursuit of your ultimate vision for Life. To accomplish this mission, The Path program guides you in clearly defining in writing: 1) what you believe in 2) what you want out of Life 3) and how you are going to get there. Now you may be asking: what is The Path, exactly? The Path is a series of simple, time-restricted journaling prompts that traverse the topics of Character, Career, Relationships, Finance, Lifestyle, and Health. At the end of this experience, you will have a written compass. A compass that orients you forward, to the future you envision for yourself. It’s only through articulating your goals in written word that you can begin the process of forging order out of chaos. Pressing the building blocks of life out of the soft clay of uncertainty. Join this tribe of shakers & doers. Get off the couch, & on The Path.
